ORBIS is a nonprofit and humanitarian organization dedicated to preserve and restore sight in the developing world. It produces long term, sustainable solutions to prevent and cure blindness. ORBIS draws upon an international faculty of more than 450 volunteer ophthalmologists, nurses, and biomedical engineers. Since 1982, ORBIS has been active in China. More than 675,000 patients have received surgery form OBRIS programs, and an additional 632,000 have been treated in ORBIS-supported out-patient facilities.
According to the World Health Organization, China is estimated to have one of the largest numbers of blind people in the world: around 5.4 million, or 18 percent of the world's blind. Sights on China, an OBRIS Canada Chinese Telethon, will be an one hour live television broadcast that will be aired nationally on Fairchild Television in Toronto and Vancouver on Sunday October 19, 2008 from 10 pm to 11 pm. It will consist of celebrity appeals from ORBIS spokespeople, success stories of our programs, interviews of ORBIS representatives, cheque presentations and appeals for immediate donations.
