Coordinator & Author: Emily Cho To start off the new school year, on September 16, 2006, 10 CCCYC volunteers set out to Morningside Park to participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. The TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is a campaign coordinated by Vancouver Aquarium Conservation to clean up Canadian shorelines. Our effort was part of an international action to raise awareness on litter and aquatic garbage. The data we generated will be compiled with other local efforts for analysis and tracking. Our volunteers have successfully diverted two full garbage bags of waste from entering the fragile Morningside tributary. Garbage removal has provided a safer habitat for wildlife and a healthier site for recreation. Our group has even received personal gratitude from park users for their admirable deed! Once again, thank you to all the CCCYC staff and volunteers for their honourable action in waste diversion and garbage pickup. Top 3 shoreline litter in Canada: 3. Bags – 50,511 collected 2. Food wrappers – 99, 179 collected 1. Cigarette butts – 214,000+ collected For a summary of Canada’s cleanup efforts, please visit www.vanaqua.org/cleanup in the Spring for the Final Report.
